Remember when you were young and would jump out of bed on Christmas morning to see what Santa brought you? Well, that was me on Thursday morning when I realized that the day was finally here, HTGAWM was back for season 3!
This episode was ironically titled “We’re Good People Now” and we could all tell that the theory would be proven within the first few minutes. The premiere was chock full of hilarious dialogue and a more familial feel between all of the characters because I mean, they did all get away with murder twice. This episode was a great start to the season and showed the audience that we’re definitely going on a wild ride this season. Let’s get into it!
When we open, Wes is being interviewed by the police concerning the murder of Wallace Mahoney, a.k.a. his dad. After lying to the police, Wes leaves the station and hops into none other than Annalise’s car. She drives them to a secluded area on the side of the highway and proceeds to apologize and reveal that it was Frank who killed his father. In a flashback, we see Frank pick up Wes and take him to meet his father at his office, saying that it was Annalise’s idea, it wasn’t. He tells Wes to go ahead and approach him and that he’d be there if anything happened, he wasn’t. Annalise told Wes that Frank killed Mahoney for her because of what Mahoney did to her in the past (being responsible for the death of her child). After that info, Annalise and Wes make their way into the woods to scream away their feelings.
Cut back to Frank who we find in some kind of truck stop restroom shaving off his perfect beard and head before he goes on the run. Obviously, no one was prepared. But later when we see him again, our doubts are removed because he still looks A1.
Next thing you know, it was four months later and the start of a new school year which is always fun. The Keating Five are back at it again in another one of Annalise’s classes. The obviously hadn’t seen each other over the break considering how Asher almost killed himself tripping on the stairs to greet Laurel and Wes. The five are also greeted by a new hater, Mr. Drake, who believes their only in the class because Annalise is teaching it since their grades are trash. Upon arrival, Annalise explains that the students are going to finally start lawyering as they’ll be taking on their own pro bono cases and competing for first and second chair. As soon as she shares that the students now have a chance to be like her, she pulls down the dry erase board and it has a photo of her with the word “killer” on it. She remains unfazed as the students have worried looks plastered on their faces, but we all know she was low-key shook.
The first client is Karim Asif, an Iraqi refugee who was facing deportation after serving time for marijuana possession. After all of the students defend their strategies to help Karim, Wes and Mr. Drake earn the role of first and second chair, unfortunately, losing the case. The Five confront Annalise after class about the photo and she tells them not to worry since they’re all “good people” now. Yeah, we’ll see how long that lasts.
To the surprise of no one, Annalise goes home after class and gets out the burner phone that she hides in her jewelry box to check for messages from a mystery sender. I thought that it was Frank but turned out to be wrong.
In the span of the episode, we find out what everyone was up to over the summer. In May, we see that Laurel is the first to have contact with Annalise. She paid her a visit before she left to Mexico. Annalise assumed it was a trip with Frank, but sadly it wasn’t. She did call him all summer but never heard back. Laurel didn’t tell Annalise that especially when she was swearing her allegiance to her. As she was leaving, Annalise’s only request was a bottle of Tequila. Oh Annalise, don’t ever change.
In June, Connor was up next. He seemed like he was just relaxing during the summer considering when we see him. He’s in a lawn chair tanning with his feet in a kiddie pool. Annalise seemed to have just been checking in on him. Connor was fine but was worried about Oliver trying to get a job with Annalise so he told her not to. He expressed interest last season but nothing ever happened because he already had a job, now he doesn’t. Annalise agreed, but of course, we knew she had her fingers crossed behind her back. I’m sure it was only to protect herself though since Oliver knows a lot about hacking.
In July, we caught up with Asher. Asher showed up at Annalise’s house while she was preparing for what looked like a bbq to ask for a loan to help pay his tuition. He can’t do it “himself” because his father is dead and his mom and he aren’t on good terms. Of course, she denies him and tells him to get a job like everyone else. So Asher did just that and became an undergrad R.A. Michaela and him had continued to hook up until she realized that she truly wasn’t down with the dorm life.
August took a toll on both Michaela and Annalise. Michaela had obviously taken all of the murdering to heart and was having a hard time coping so she took to becoming the resident barfly. My girl was almost arrested for DUI, but of course, Annalise saved her. You would think Michaela would’ve been grateful, but the girl is full of so much animosity towards Annalise and proceeded to call her a “bitch”. Annalise reminded her that she’s strong and can handle anything that comes her way. Annalise on the other hand almost lost her job. She had a meeting with the new university president (Lauren VĂ©lez) and she wasn’t happy that her interns were in the bottom 10 percent of the class. So she decided to move Annalise to a research position and take away her Intro to Criminal Law class. Annalise wasn’t having that, so she convinced the president to let her run this law clinic class.
Wes was the only one who had a quiet summer seeing as he started a new relationship with a girl named Meggie. He also spent his summer ignoring Laurel’s texts which I thought was strange considering they seemed to be the closest friends in the group.
Of course, Annalise didn’t keep her promise and she hired Oliver against Connor’s wishes. She then tells Connor that Oliver had actually hacked Stanford’s system to rescind his acceptance. Later on, Connor mentioned how he knew about the Stanford thing and Oliver came clean, but Connor didn’t respond the way that Oliver wanted him too. Connor then decided that he didn’t like this new version of himself and that he needed time to figure everything out by his lonesome *clutches pearls and cries*. Honestly, I was ready to turn the show off, I couldn’t believe that they broke up. Let’s see how everything works out once they start working together, I don’t think the breakup will last too long…hopefully.
Eventually, Laurel had enough of Wes ignoring her so she decided to confront him about it. So she went to his place to talk things over and it turns out, Wes couldn’t be around her because all he saw was Frank whenever he looked at her. Enter Meggie, Wes’s mysterious girlfriend who actually existed. Meggie upon embracing Laurel had apparently heard a lot about her. What could Wes have been telling her? I thought that was a little off.

We also find out that Annalise has been talking to a private investigator on her burner phone when she receives a call that he had found Frank. As soon as he asked what she wanted to do, she hesitated giving Frank enough time to go into the room and straight murk the guy!!
Fast forward two months, we once again see our opening scene involving the ambulance and body on a gurney. The body had come from Annalise’s house which was on fire as well. So once she lifts up the sheet to see whose body it was, she breaks down in tears.
Obviously, something bad is coming. And it isn’t good for whoever dies and Annalise’s house. “We’re Good People Now” was a fab episode and I can’t wait to see what the rest of this season has in store. If only I was able to prepare myself now for the character, we’ll soon be mourning. Who do you think the latest victim will be?
