Blindspot 2x03 'Hero Fears Imminent Rot' Recap: I Pledge Allegiance To... Who Again?

After the emotional toll of last week, we continued on with a slightly less emotional true to storyline path this week. “Hero Fears Imminent Rot” brought us back to what the show and season is about, Sandstorm, and what their plans are. The show is still looking into Reade’s past, as they should since it’s so murky, and dropping hints about who characters really are. This episode wasn’t too bad, but I’m excited to see what next week will bring. Let’s get it!

We start off with where we left off last week, with Jane waking up in a house in the woods after Roman kidnapped her. Of course, she tries to find her way out, but we all knew they weren’t dumb enough to put her in a room that she could escape, but doesn’t have any luck. Her escape is interrupted by a guard who comes to escort her to a meeting with Roman and Shepard. The point of the meeting was that Shepard wanted Jane to recount her torture story again. As she recalls what happened, Shepard states that her story doesn’t add up since Cade had met with an agent for passage to Venezuela! Jane recovered so quickly because she knew she was caught. And changed her facts up by stating that she didn’t have access to anything that could give her a sense of time. I thought that she was in the clear until Sheperd told her that her loyalty will now have to be tested.

Enter Jeffrey Kantor. He’s an engineer that Jane recruited pre-memory wipe. His purpose was to copy a microchip that was necessary for Phase 2 of their plan. Obviously, Jeffrey didn’t do his job and missed the drop. It was apparently because of Jane being absent for a while and he didn’t know who to trust, since she was his handler. She’s able to “get anyone to do what she wants” according to
Roman, so Jane’s the one who has to confront him about it.

Meanwhile, the team is busy trying to track down a duo setting off bombs around the city. With Patterson’s research skills, she’s able to inform us that the bombs are specifically, Dime bombs that were often used by the Navy for tests in secret on an island in Puerto Rico. Great. After the second bomb, the team finds a Twitter account that’s tweeting out about the bombs and their dedications to certain people. Nas and Patterson realize that the tweets are scheduled so if they get into the account, they can figure out where the next location will be.

Getting back to Roman and Jane, they show up at his house which Jane remembers and once inside, Jeffrey runs and hides in his panic room. I didn’t see that coming. Jane comes through as always when she uses her skills in persuasion to coax Jeffrey out of the room after they take down the security team he calls. Jeffrey thinks he’s in the clear, but he has to know what’s coming once Roman knocks him over the head with his gun. It’s time for Jane’s assessment. Will she shoot Jeffrey and pledge her allegiance to Sandstorm, or will she find a way to get out of it and do right by him and herself? Whelp, you guessed it, Jane tried to stall and get out of killing Jeffrey so Roman did it instead. Roman slapped Jane with a great big “you failed the test” and Jane is shook.

At FBI headquarters, Patterson and Nas have found the next bomb location, Prospect Park, and the team is gearing up to head out when Jane returns. Thank goodness because Weller had been freaking out all day when she didn’t show up in the morning. The team is obviously dealing with some mental issues as well at the moment, their heads aren’t in the game at all. Jane’s freaking out about what the consequences will be with Sheperd, Reade is low-key trying to get help from Borden with his issue of repressed memories, and Weller woke up in a drunken haze after trying to cope with his baby news. So it doesn’t seem like any of them are able to go out and catch a bomber. So it was no surprise when things started to go left in the field. Yes, the bomb was disarmed which was great. But Jane almost got her head blown off because she felt that she needed to prove that she could kill someone i.e. one of the bombers. Without Weller, Jane would’ve been no more.

Now that we have a man on the loose, the goal is to stop him before he can set off another bomb. The lone bomber had made his way to a Navy recruitment center in Queens and held up some hostages, typical. Jane being forced to stay behind used her time to talk with Borden about her killer issues.
At the Navy center, the bomber has a suicide vest on and is threatening to kill everyone if they try to do anything. Oh, and he was also live on periscope during the whole ordeal. Weller decided that he’d be the savior and try and diffuse the situation. He makes his way inside and is forced to put the bomb vest on himself, way to go Kurt. As Kurt is talking the bomber down, it appears he never wanted to hurt anyone, he just wanted to get justice for his sister’s death since she was his only family. Just when you think Weller saved the day, Nas pulls her sniper rifle out and fires two shots killing the guy! Obviously, this did nothing but strain Weller and Nas’s relationship even more.

This episode left a lot of questions unanswered. Why did Sandstorm want Kantor’s help, what did he contribute to Phase 2? How are they going t carry out their plans now that he’s dead, did they have someone else in the works? Does Borden’s ability to speak Arabic have to do with him being the suspected mole Roman and Sheperd mentioned, or is he just a secretive guy? Is Roman setting up Jane, I mean, why did he cover for her? When will Reade remember what really happened at camp? Hopefully, we figure out soon...but not too soon.

Blindpost appears Wednesday’s at 8pm on NBC
