Blindspot 'Her Spy's Mind' Recap: Who's That Lady?

It’s been a minute since I’ve recapped Blindspot, but honestly, it’s because it hasn’t done much for me. The past two episodes almost had me turn off my tv halfway through the episode. For some reason, though, I didn’t. This episode made up for the last two as it was the Blindspot I know and love. I enjoyed the episode because things are finally starting to come together. So I guess we needed two filler episodes for the writers to get themselves together. Let’s get into it!

We picked up where we left off with Zapata finding Reede standing over Jones’ dead body in his living room. This was when Zapata went into cover up for my friend mode. She devised a whole plan around how they would get Reede’s tap out of Jones’ VCR player before the police found it and started asking questions. This plan was to wait until the NYPD declared the area a crime scene and then the FBI could swoop in to ask for information. The plan proved successful seeing as Zapata barely got the tape out in time as an officer and Reede were making their way down to the basement, so she ended up bringing it with her. Zapata also confronts the neighborhood security officer who saw Reede in his car the morning of the murder. She low-key threatened to snitch on his pregnant girlfriend's expired visa had he not kept his mouth shut and handed over Reede’s license plate number and forgot the whole thing. Damn girl. After all of that, she doesn’t seem to believe that Reede didn’t actually murder Coach Jones like he said he didn’t. Upon questioning him, she puts it together that if he did indeed hear someone and run up from the basement, that he would’ve come up on Jones choking and essentially still being alive. But of course, Reede fires back and tells Zapata that if she truly believes that he did it, then she should call it in and have the police arrest him. I don’t know, I think that he did it and might’ve blacked out or something. He does have the ability to repress memories

While that was happening, Patterson had cracked the code that was the black hole photo and it turns out that it was emails that reveled the location of Douglas Winter, a hacker who released many government secrets. So many secrets that he’s known for the biggest leak in our history. He was hiding out in Bulgaria so Nas and Weller went to go get him. Turns out they weren’t the only ones with that plan. A member of the CIA was also in Bulgaria to capture Winter and bring him in. This same CIA agent was one of the guys that tortured Jane and Weller was not happy about that. He would’ve killed him had Nas not stopped him. When the duo finally gets into the hotel and finds Winter, he actually wasn’t hiding out there but was being held hostage. He was framed by the Bulgarian government so he thought. He was actually framed by two masked people who went to his house to snatch him at gunpoint. In this moment, we were reminded of how much Mayfair meant to Weller as Winter claimed to know her just so they could help him escape. Nas comforted him with her body and I thought it was strange but knew it was coming because of all of their tension. So four for you Nas!

The episode wouldn’t have been complete without Jane and Roman on another Sandstorm mission to get the last piece of their plan. This one actually seemed pretty normal. Get in, help a man go into anaphylactic shock, steal the microchip, and be on their way. Of course, that didn’t happen. There were a few bumps in the plan, but Jane worked them out and they two were able to get what they needed without Roman killing anyone as he usually does. These Sandstorm plot lines are a little boring to me seeing as Jane keeps asking questions and no one wants to give her anything to work with. So having them sprinkled in works. This episode, though, Jane’s main goal was to connect more with Roman so she could essentially break him. With the help of her more frequent childhood flashbacks, she was able to crack his shell. So I’m excited to see how this plays out.

Patterson was also dealing with her own drama while trying to help everyone solve theirs. She had been sent a file with the modulated voices of the people who kidnapped Winter so she had to work on that as well as her relationship with Borden. She kept blowing him off so that she could finish her work and after waiting for over 2 hours for her, Borden was finally going to go home and that’s when Patterson was sharing how stressed she was and called him David in the process, yikes. Borden took that as his cue to dip. While Patterson was in his therapy room reflecting on her slip of the tongue, she noticed something on the roof and found it to be a bug. She was able to trace it back to a server that belonged to none other than Nas so she alerted Weller. Honestly, it took them long enough to find out that she’d been listening to whatever was going on in the room. I just want to know what her deal is. Whose side is she really on? My theory is that whenever new characters are introduced on a show, they’re usually always bad guys in disguise. My opinion on sketchy Nas still stands.

The episode wasn’t all bad seeing as Patterson was able to unmodulated the voices of the people who kidnapped Winter. Jane identified the voices belonging to Roman and Shepard. But the funny thing was that Weller recognized Shepard’s voice as well, but how? It has to have something to do with Sandstorm watching him his whole life. Had she interacted with him at some point and wiped it from his memory?

We aren’t even halfway into the season yet, but I feel like with this episode we’re finally starting to get into gear. Who knows how much longer until this Sandstorm thing is finally revealed? I enjoyed this episode and want to know what you thought as well!
