HTGAWM 'It's About Frank' Recap: Michaela Gives Me Life

Looking back on last week’s episode the reactions it brought were nothing compared to those this week. This had to be the best episode of the series so far in my opinion. The acting was so on point that I couldn’t contain myself. There were so many things that happened this episode. We found out who was posting the flyers, who isn’t dead, as well as more about our favorite psycho, Frank. Let’s chat!
We opened with Annalise in the hair salon and I can say that I’ve never seen a more relatable scene on television! Mary J. Blige guested this week (apparently it won’t be her last ep either!) as Annalise’s hair stylist as well as Paula Jai Parker as another. In this moment, it was as if Annalise was fine and living a normal life for the time being, but nope of course not.
Next thing you know; we jump to Bonnie in the funeral home making the arrangements for her father when she gets a call from Laurel. Of course, the call is about if Bonnie has seen Frank or not and if she’d tell Laurel when she did. Bonnie agrees to share “if” she sees Frank which we all know she does. Frank was standing around the corner from the funeral home looking like a puppy with its tail between its legs. We haven’t seen him looking this vulnerable since he killed the hitman and cried! Bonnie of course thanked Frank for killing her father and Frank admits to killing Wes’ father as well, finally. The two go back to the hotel Frank is hiding out in and talk about how they should run away together and start a new life away from everything. This convo wasn’t even the most shocking part, I believe Frank was restless and it woke Bonnie who proceeded to lay with him very closely before they hooked up! Honestly, I wasn’t even ready for that so I had no idea how to react.

Moving on, Annalise was finally doing what needed to be done to start her recovery process, pack up her liquor store isle amount of alcohol. I knew she had that little cabinet for her spirits, but had no idea just how much she had! While she was doing so, she was having flashbacks of her and Sam when they first moved into the house and you could tell how genuinely happy she was. Once she finished packing up, she made it to her first AA meeting and was called out by the person in charge to introduce herself. And because everyone on this show is connected to everything somehow, she wasn’t alone in her AA group seeing as President Hargrove was in attendance as well. Unfortunately, Annalise’s road to recovery hits a snag when she goes home and I assume finishes much more than one bottle of her discarded alcohol. Wes thankfully found her and stayed with her while she shared how she doesn’t deserve anyone because they’re all too good to her.

Annalise’s flashbacks continued through a good part of the episode and they weren’t only about her and Sam’s relationship but about the first time she met Frank. I’ve never wanted to know a character’s back story more than I wanted to know his. Sam, as a favor to his sister, visited Frank in prison and wanted Annalise’s help with his case since he was up for parole. She didn’t want to do it pro bono, so it took a little convincing. Frank had been incarcerated for trying to kill his dad when he was 13 years old. Frank was a strong 30 years old upon being visited by Sam, so he missed out on practically his whole life in there. He didn’t really seem like he wanted to get out of prison either based on the amount of crimes he committed while there. At first, he told Sam that he wasn’t sorry for what he did and that he planned on killing his father for weeks and was only mad when he didn’t actually die! Talk about crazy AF! He later admitted that he felt guilty for what he did and Annalise agreed to help him. Which was around the same time she first learned she was pregnant, gave Frank a job, and the horrible car accident that happened later. Charlie Webber’s acting in the entire episode was A1, I want more!

There wasn’t a case this week, but the five were working together to study for a big exam. The scene couldn’t go by without Simon Drake inserting himself into the situation in which he did so by offering to share his notes with the group and instead gave Connor a phot copy of his butt. How juvenile. He definitely didn’t have the last laugh when his laptop went missing and he had the audacity to accuse the group of stealing it and tried to check their bags. Michaela had enough of this boy and literally read him for filth when she told him he wouldn’t do such a thing to the group or anyone else in the class. I cried tears of joy for how proud I was of her popping off on him. He had it coming for sure. The funny thing though, was when she was telling him off, her hidden southern accent came out and Connor and Asher didn’t let her forget that it did. When Michaela and Oliver revealed that they had actually stolen Simon’s laptop it was when they found something. He was the one who had put up the flyers of Annalise!! The photo shopped pic was right there on his computer. I wasn’t too surprised because from the beginning I knew it was him. My theory is that new characters aren’t introduced on a show for no reason. So it was either him or President Hargrove who were guilty. So the reveal was a little anticlimactic. Wes and Laurel also had a moment in the stairwell when he shared he was tired of lying to Meggie and possibly wanted to break up with her and since Frank wasn’t in the picture…. boy what?! I’m not one of the people on board for a Wes/Laurel thing so I couldn’t believe it.

Annalise was of course told about the owner of the flyers and was happy. She could care less that it was a student, she was just happy that it wasn’t someone serious that actually knew what they did. And for the sake of the Keating Five, they better be happy as well. Annalise busted into his apartment and threatened that he could be expelled for a possible hate crime as well as defamation. Since she was on her legal kick, she also showed up at the president’s office again with a $50 Million lawsuit. Of course the President Hargrove looked at her like she was crazy because of the high amount but Annalise knew she had to “go big or go home”. She took that threat as a promise and decided to make some calls to get Annalise her job and license back. She also shares with Annalise that she could use some help to get through her alcohol problem. I thought that was funny because it was like the woman expected Annalise to want her as a sponsor. Sis, you’re in the same boat, I don’t know what help you can offer Annalise lol.

Three Weeks Later

We’re back at the hospital finishing the convo that we ended with last week. Meggie didn’t have much details on Laurel’s condition, but she promised to share whatever she had with Oliver and Bonnie. Bonnie called someone who we don’t know yet to tell them that Laurel was pregnant. I think it was Frank, but who knows with this show. Oliver started freaking out a little, as he should, and tried calling Connor to make sure he was okay. There was no answer until the second time he called and instead of Connor picking up, it was Michaela! Her mother had actually found Connor’s phone in Michaela’s couch which makes sense as to why he didn’t answer. He probably was rushing out and left it. But that’s beside the point, we know Michaela is alive and that her mom is at her house! We’re finally going to get a glimpse into Michaela’s story hopefully before the fall break. We also know that an unidentified male was found in the house. So that means Frank, Wes, Connor, Nate, Asher, or even Simon Drake are at a risk for being #underthesheet and President Hargrove isn’t, sigh.

This episode was phenomenal and I don’t know how Peter Nowalk can top it! Can’t wait to see who’s alive next week! What’d you think!?
